CBD For Pets – What Are The Benefits And Does It Work?

When it comes to our pets we realize that it comes with great responsibility. Our cats, dogs and any of our four legged pets are family, and the hardest part of all is watching your most loyal friend suffer from pain or even the distress of anxiety. There are specific ailments from which both humans and pets suffer from, such as, cancer, anxiety, epilepsy, sleep deprivation, and arthritis.

If you have been watching your pet suffer in pain or distress, then it might be time to consider CBD products. There is growing evidence that the effects of CBD are not just beneficial for humans, but also pets. There are some particular ingredients present in CBD that will benefit your pets in various ways. So let’s take a look into what it is and what the possible benefits are of CBD.

CBD Is Not Psychoactive And It Is Not Marijuana

CBD which stands for (cannabidiol) is a compound found in cannabis and hemp. THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) can also be found in cannabis. It’s this compound that gives marijuana its psychoactive properties. Most CBD oils are just that … the beneficial CBD without the THC. And they typically come from hemp, not marijuana. In short, your dog won’t get “high” from CBD oil … he’ll get the relaxation without the intoxication. You can learn more about just what CBD is in my last article Understanding What CBD Is (CBD 101)

Reduces Anxiety

Does your dog suffer from separation anxiety or noise phobias? CBD has been extensively studied for its effect on stress and anxiety. In humans, research shows it is capable of reducing anxiety in both healthy people and people with anxiety disorders.

Today the same can be true for our pets, though there hasn’t been any research or study on just how CBD benefits pets. However, scientists do believe that cannabinoids connect with the endocannabinoid receptors in the nervous system of pets, just like those of humans. So it would be no different in the consistency of CBD for pets than those for humans, such as capsules, oils topical balms or creams, chew-able treats, and other such shapes and forms.  In short using CBD for anxiety in pets seems to offer the same relief. It is important to note please consult with your vet before you choose to give your pet any form of CBD.

Can Help Fight Cancer

Research is showing that CBD oil and other substances in hemp and cannabis have an anti-tumor effect. It has even been shown to stop cancer cells from growing and increase tumor cell death. It is helping the immune system attack and kill cancer cells by blocking their ability to produce energy. CBD increases the blood flow level in pets, which results in-activeness and promotes the healthy hormones of animals, animals are less likely to get attacked by diseases in the first place. Also a lot of cancer drugs and treatments make eating or maintaining food (nausea) difficult. CBD seems to help with offset this.

Manages Seizures And Epilepsy

Estimates suggest that up to 5% of dogs suffer from seizures. Most dogs with seizures are given drugs such as phenobarbital and potassium bromide. These drugs may help control the seizures, but they can also be extremely harmful to your dog’s liver and other organs. And the drugs don’t work in all cases. CBD has shown great promise as an alternative to regular drugs in dogs and cats who have drug resistant epilepsy. In one study, 7 of 8 patients with drug-resistant epilepsy saw a definite improvement within 4 to 5 months. Just like what research is finding with children pets also showed a reduction in the amount of seizures.

Pain And Inflammation

The cannabinoids in CBD have also been shown to work well for pain. So well, in fact, that scientists are starting to consider it as a new class of drug for the treatment of chronic pain. Studies show CBD to be very effective for reducing:

It is a little early to know for sure but according to a recent study, the intake of CBD can increase the activeness and comfort in dogs with osteoarthritis. Like humans CBD has shown the most promise for helping with chronic pain. As our pets age they are prone to a lot of the same old age problems us humans have. Rheumatoid arthritis and ostheo arthritis are two of the biggest ones. CBD taken regularly as been shown to reduce the chronic pain of these diseases.

Is CBD Safe For Pets?

With so many studies showing the health benefits of CBD, the most encouraging result is that CBD appears to be safe, even when taken in high doses and over extended periods of time. CBD oil appears to be safe and easily digested by animals, according to the World Health Organization report.

While it does seem to decrease the activity of liver enzymes used to metabolize many prescription drugs. So if your dog is on medication, it will be best you will want to check with your vet before using CBD.

Again we want to stress that most CBD oil for dogs and other pets comes from hemp oil, so it contains no or very small traces of THC. Because of this, hemp-based CBD products for humans and animals are legal in all 50 states.

The bottom line is, CBD oil could be a healthy (or even life-saving) herb for your dog. More and more pet owners and holistic vets are drawn to its diverse health benefits. And they feel good knowing the side effects are mild and animals don’t appear to build up a tolerance.

  • Make sure the product is organic: If it isn’t organic, your CBD oil could contain pesticides, fungicides or solvents.Remember you are putting this into your pets body or yours.
  • Don’t cheap out: The higher the quality and purity, the higher the cost. Don’t price shop … make sure your CBD oil is free of additives and has a good amount of CBD. If it is a good quality brand you will have no trouble finding this information, all quality companies are transparent.
  • Get the analysis: Ask for a lab analysis of the amount of CBD in the product. Many CBD oils contain only small amounts of CBD. The manufacturer should provide a certificate of analysis. You’ll also want to make sure there is little or no THC in the product. Again company transparency. If they test they will have analysis. The one we recommend cbdbiocare not only have their analysis on their website but also on every product that goes out.
  • Buy CBD as a tincture: You can buy CBD in treats but the best form is in a tincture. This way, you can adjust your dog’s dose drop by drop to make sure he gets the most benefit. Like humans the edibles are great but when it comes to absorption the tinctures will always be better.

Bottom line is this if you want to try CBD for your pets go for it. Start your dog off slowly but don’t let the naysayers tell you CBD isn’t a good option for your dog … the research is continuing and the results are very promising.

  1. I know when CBD came into the market most of us were of the opinion that it was pure marijuana. But after the tests and the stories of how it is effective to the human body, we came to realize that indeed it is not Marijuana. I believe that the positive effects can also be implemented into our pets.I love that CBD can promote healthy hormones in pets. It is always a  depressing moment calling in a vet all the time cause the dog is unwell. I would rather prevent the illnesses from occurring. Thank you for highlighting these great benefits of CBD.

    1. I 100% agree that if there is a way to prevent pain in our pets than it is a plus from just taking it after the fact. Prevention is always the best medicine for sure. The benefits that cbd is starting to be recognized for are numerous and I believe the benefits will continue. With more research into this amazing supplement and hemp oil it will become a go to for both humans and our pets.

  2. CBD for pets?  I’m very surprising to hear that.  I’m glad that your article got my attention.  Most pet lovers do not want to lose their beloved pets.  They know that their beloved pets are suffering from pain in their body. It is good idea to use CBD to sooth their pets’ pain so they can become more comfortabe for a while.  Thanks for sharing big tips with us!!!!

    1. As a life long dog owner myself there is nothing worse than seeing your fur babies with pain or anxiety. They really are like our children. With cbd oil you can offer relief to them from pain and anxiety,it is great.

  3. Thanks for this information, I have been concerned about our dog, her name is Rosie, she is 10 years old and she has anxiety disorder. I have been trying to find out what I can do for her, it sounds like cbd is a great option, I never realized that a person could treat their dogs with cbd, and better yet your pet gets the relaxation and not the intoxication.

I know that cbd is very beneficial for humans, my wife has used it and it has worked great for her, but now that I know t is a safe treatment for pets, I will be safe knowing that I can treat our pet, after verifying it is safe for Rosie with our vet.

I enjoyed reading your post, you have a lot of great information, thanks.

    1. Thank you for responding. Yes cbd is a great alternative for our pets, especially the older dogs. We had a 16 yr old Irish Setter a number of years back this was before cbd came on the market.Wished I had it back than to give her as she was always in pain. Her arthritis got to the point that we had to help her each time to get up.Please check with your vet first of course. However they seem to have a lot of the same systems that we the endocannibodial system especially, hence cbd works the same way for dogs and cats.

  4. Hi, I believe if CBD oil can help humans, why not dogs and other animals? CBD oil is trending big time and it seems as though it can help a variety of issues.
I don’t own a dog, but if I did and my dog needed some kind of treatment for pain or whatever, I would give them CBD oil.
It works in people and I’ve tried it myself. The only hard part is getting the right dosage. Everyone and every animal is different.
Nobody wants to see any living creature suffer with pain anything else.

    1. I agree with you on the dosage part it does take trial and error to get to that sweet spot. Unlike traditional medicines cbd is not a one size fits all and that is an issue that is hard for people to grasp. It is the same for dogs and cats also. My one dog gets cbd bacon treats when it is thundering out sometimes 1 is needed sometimes 2 treats. My other dog is always fine with just one.

  5. Hello Catty, out pets deserves the best of everything as well as we do, and we all should look for a ways or ways to get them the best as well. Cbd have been really helpful to us all and I really want to say it’s nice as these product will help our dogs feel better and I’m happy about it. Cheers

    1. Thank you for your time. Yes cbd with bacon for my dogs has helped them tremendously. One suffers from hot spots and one is scared of thunder. Since cbd they are both doing much better.

  6. CBD oil is fast becoming the go to product for humans and pets, an awful lot of positive research has been carried out and surprisingly good results for many different purposes.  The fact it does not contain thc is a huge bonus. I would much rather have a prevention than a cure to stop animals from suffering in the first place. Your pet is a member of your family that you love and want to keep safe and well. I know many people who have used CBD for their pets with massive results.

    1. Yes thank you for your kind words. Not only do I use it regularly myself, but I also have one of my 2 dogs on it. She is terrified of loud noises like fireworks and thunder so I started her on the bacon treats with cbd when needed. After about 15 minutes of taking she is much better and stops shaking.
